Instagram is a great place to start
For a lot of small businesses, Instagram is where it all begins. You post your work, people message you, and orders come in on WhatsApp. It's free, it's quick, and it works. Plenty of bakeries, boutiques, salons and home businesses have grown this way, and there's nothing wrong with that.
But there's a difference between being on Instagram and owning your place online. Your Instagram page belongs to Instagram. A website belongs to you. As your business grows, that difference starts to matter more and more.
1. You don't own your Instagram page
Accounts get hacked, restricted or locked every day, often with no warning and no one to call. If your whole business lives on one app, a single problem can stop your orders overnight.
The algorithm is the other risk. You can post your best work and only a small part of your followers will ever see it. A website is always there, always shows exactly what you want, and no one can switch it off for you.
2. Customers search on Google, not just on Instagram
When someone needs a cake for Saturday, a dentist near them or a gift shop that delivers, most of them type it into Google. Instagram pages rarely show up for those searches. Websites do.
Without a website, you're invisible to everyone who isn't already following you. With one, you can be found by people who have never heard of you, at the exact moment they're ready to buy.
3. A website answers questions before they're asked
If your DMs are full of "price?", "where are you?" and "do you deliver?", you're doing the same job again and again. A website puts your prices, location, timings and how to order in one clear place.
Customers get answers instantly, even at midnight, and you spend less time replying and more time on the work itself. The people who do message you are ready to order, not just asking.
4. A website makes you look established
Fair or not, people trust businesses that have a proper website. It tells a new customer that you're real, you're serious and you'll still be here next month. That matters most for bigger orders, like wedding cakes, clinic visits or anything where people are trusting you with their money.
A clean website with real photos, clear prices and genuine reviews often does the convincing for you, before a customer ever sends a message.
The best answer: use both, together
This isn't Instagram or a website. The strongest small businesses use both. Instagram is where people discover you and see your latest work. Your website is where they come to check you out, see your prices and place an order.
Put your website link in your bio, link back to Instagram from your website, and let each one do what it does best.
When is the right time to get a website?
If you're answering the same questions every day, if customers ask whether you have a website, or if you want to reach people beyond your followers, it's time. You don't need a huge budget to start. A simple, well made website with the basics done right is worth far more than a complicated one.
